I've just applied a new university for a linguistics masters: Hacettepe Uni in Ankara. They're using a website that operates over expired HTTPS and the thing is a mix of Java Swing aesthetics with '00s fascination with stupid JS abhorrences. It has its own windowing systems and shit moves around and has close and maximise buttons. It is so beautiful that I had to fullscreen my browser to find the top part of the "window" for the application form, and I was almost becoming religious again to at least have the God to trust in that nothing goes wrong during the use of this pile of hot stinking shit. But I did it, and I think I did apply, fingers crossed. Also, it took the department two days and a handful of emails to tell me whether they want recommendation letters. Turns out they don't, weird—but at least one less letter to ask for from my previous teachers. And this was supposed to be a great university, guess that's only the Medicine part of it that's any good.

I'll apply two more schools in the coming weeks one in Izmir and another one in Ankara, and at the end of the summer I'll pick one from the ones I qualify. I am quite sure I'll pick the Izmir one if all three will go well. Hacettepe was my first choice, it immediately became the last in the last two days.

A couple weeks ago I was contacted by a publisher for a translation job, and I'm still waiting for a reply from them. I am so lucky: this coincided with the Eid holidays last week, which the govt combined with the two surrounding weekends, and a nine days holidays out of nowhere. Lost nine important days between all this stuff to be done. I hope to hear back from this within this week, and if I can get a decent enough contract, I'll've gotten just the kind of job I want: freelance + remote! Hope they won't try to contract me on the cheap, tho. I have no chance to accept even if I'm willing, I'll need some decent money given I'll need to move out at the end of the summer.

I think I'll get back to excercising some time this week. Start out with jogging for a couple days, get blood flowing around, then make a nice routine to follow.

We are leaving on Saturday to the maritimes to go see my stepson graduate high school, and we'll be gone for 9 days, so I have a lot of work to do at work before I leave! Also we are getting a tree and a couple bushes delivered at home this week so I need to find time to plant those because they won't survive for a week with no water, or make arrangements for them (maybe a friend could keep them at their house?) if I run out of time!

After a lot of complaining and procrastination, since Friday I'm kinda learning Java from scratch.

It's going better than I thought. I had a very negative view of SoloLearn and similar learning platforms, but it helped me quite a bit. Coming from Python and C, I used to find Java's syntax too big and verbose. It was unpleasant to the eyes and difficult to parse. SoloLearn's clean presentation and byte-sized lessons helped me get over my grudge and even appreciate, in a way, the object-oriented regularity of the language. I still find it silly having to import a class and create an object just for simple input, but I can see how programmers can get used to this level of consistency

Now I have three days to make an entire command line cash register application. Suggestions are welcomed! :P

Being as apparently it is summer, I was looking forward to spending the evenings outside. However, in the great British summer tradition, that plan is being scuppered by the crap weather. So need to find something to do indoors. Perhaps the cinema tonight.

    Any recommendations?
