What have you been listening to this week?
What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something! If you've just picked up some music, please update on that as well, we'd love to see your hauls :)
Feel free to give recs or discuss anything about each others' listening habits.
You can make a chart if you use last.fm:

I'm continuing my dive into psych/stoner rock.
See my post from last week
As top comment on youtube puts it:
On the harder side of spacerock - these guys from Gothenburg, Sweden
Yuri Gagarin sounds like it would be bitchin' to listen to while working. Thanks for sharing!
The album by Yuri Gagarin is fucking bangin, and that live performance by Kikagaku Moyo is added as a visible bookmark for later, i want to explore it thoroughly, and the band as a well. Glad you decided to share.
A bit of everything :)
I found a link to Master Boot Record, sort of chiptune-infused/based metal, which is very much my thing.
Hell yeah, this is his best work IMO:

I finished Pretty Hate Machine, and now I'm onto The Downward Spiral (I'm listening to the deluxe edition BTW.) Great album. NIN is definitely one of my favorite bands, and I also just love industrial in general.
I have noticed there are a lot of fans of rock in all its different forms here on Tildes, i hope the music i provide adds some variation and color here. Perhaps even introducing something entirely different and alien some of you get a taste for.
I have not been able to stop listening to Bibio´s new album called Ribbons. I love it! perfect for when traveling in a car or by buss, or while enjoying a spring walk.
As an avid trip-hop listener i was pleased to find a freshly pressed EP from Finland called The Forest EP, by Neveready which i submitted by itself earlier this week. You can find a more detailed information in the actual submission.
I have revisited one of my favorite singers Amy Winehouse this week as well, the down tempo version of Some Unholy War stands out for me personally.
Something more that stands out is a debut EP by Dabritz called Sara. I am not much into "generic chill-hop/lofi hiphop" that has gained an immense amount of popularity for the last couple of years. But the first track called Sara captures more of the trip-hop post and shortly after the year 2000 which i enjoy. My guess is that Sara is more of the producers own sound, and the others more of a bunch of crowd pleasers or something, since the sound is so different from the rest of the EP. I actually asked the producer this question when he posted his EP on reddit, in both r/chillmusic and r/triphop if i remember correctly, and never got an answer. I do love finding indie debut albums though, and this is one of them.
Here are some songs that has been added to my spotify "forever playlist" the past week other then the stuff linked above:
Koop - Koop Island Blues
The Meters - Cissy Strut
Blue Foundation - Eyes On Fire
Moby - Flower
The Sound Defects - Kickstand
When Chai Met Toast - Firefly, Khoj
Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not
Peter Cat Recording Co. - Love Demon. I like his voice :)
Mostly the same stuff as always, some Weezer, some emo stuff and a bit of power metal - which I love but I didn't listen to too much lately. Went through like all of albums by Dragonforce again, still love it!
I got to say I've listened to the album Goodness by The Hotelier again a few days ago and I've been really obsessed with it since. I don't know why but when I first listened to it I kind of thought it was pretty meh compared to Home, Like No Place is There. It is a bit different but oh so awesome, I've even learned to play the beginning of the interlude 'N 43° 33' 55.676" W 72° 45' 11.914"' (what a catchy name for a song by the way) on my guitar. It's just so peaceful, it really evokes me just being with my friends in the nature, in the forest at night. It's an overall awesome album, recommend it to anyone who likes anything atleast a bit emo or indie rock or whatever genre it would be.
I just recently learned that the soundtrack to Jet Set Radio Future (turns out, it's just the original SEGA composed tracks, but ehh) is on spotify, so I've been listening the crap out of it, and ow man does this album slap. It's hard to recommend for sure, but pretty much if you're a fan of like Fatboy Slim or something, you'll probably get a good kick out of it. The only other thing I got is it's amazing how a song with the sample "Fuck that shit homie" made it into a rated T game.
A pretty good variety, but nothing pretty good if I'm being honest. I make a point to listen to new music whenever I can focus enough to make even a rough opinion on it. Actually, I was hoping to ask for some recommendations in the thread this week.
I've just started getting into metal a little bit after not listening to it for 5+ years. Could anyone give some recommendations for someone trying to breach the genre as a whole? I find the more you listen to a genre, the easier it is to get into it, but first you have to find something you like; this has been the struggle so far. I'm very familiar with EDM, so I started out on people like Celldweller and Qemists, who mix metal with DnB, but I used to listen to the likes of Breaking Benjamin and Gemini Syndrome. Metal seems like a very wide and diverse genre; I'd be shocked if there is nothing there I like.
Feel free to give some recs, thanks!
Edit: Okay, I found a psychedelic rock song I really like, so I'll be sure to contribute something today! Blac Rabbit - Seize the Day
Check out "Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats" and "Animals as Leaders"
Both great bands but very different in styles I might add.
Even better, actually. Getting started is the hard part; after that, I can go through related artists and spotify playlists to find more groups like them! Good to know though because I probably won't get to this for a couple weeks due to backlog
NPR has Tank and the Banga's Green Room up for First Listen, so I listened to that yesterday. They're a great maybe neo-soul or hip-hop/spoken word/funk band? They were on the Tiny Desk a while back and they're electrifying. I got to see them live and I highly recommend a show.
I cannot rep this band enough.
<3 Tank & the Bangas. Their NPR Tiny Desk concert from a few years ago was killer too:

YAAAS. That's where I (and probably a lot of people) first heard them, and they're so incredible. I just want to be their friend.
Hi, here's my first 4x4 (I'm a baby last.fm user). Right now, I'm mostly just going through (1st listens) newer releases and also have some albums present from casual listening. I can tell this 4x4 is much different from what everyone else who's posted so far listens to, but I still like to share:
First listens of new albums:
Other listens:
I suppose this is good for this week, but I listened to a lot of other stuff, too. Cheers!
Sidenotes:
Amen. Me too. .Paak is the best.
Glad you saw his Tiny Desk already, as that was going to be my next recommendation for you. But don't forget Yes Lawd! either. It was my favorite of his albums until Ventura, which has now usurped it.
Every song I have seen of hers has been fantastic but for some reason I haven't taken the time to listen to her album yet. I really should. p.s. that acoustic version you linked was amazing.
I guess I'm not alone with the tiny desk concert lol. I'm gonna add the link here, too.
I will definitely listen to all he's released after my experience with this album.
Definitely give it a shot. It was quite worth 45 minutes of my time and has very much solidified me as a fan.
I know! I think I saw someone in the comments of the official song mention it, so I looked it up, and it was just so powerful- a lot more raw and emotional than the final version.
Let's use my own thread properly for the first time in a while! 2019 has been saved for me recently and it really does seem like the very low amounts of good music I could dig out last year turned out to just be a fluke. Though I still feel like the renaissance / silver age hip hop had for a chunk of this decade came to a close last year and hasn't recovered, so I can't rely on getting a lot of mind-bending stuff just from keeping up with that genre...but I think it's working out fine now :) Anyway for some specifics I've been listening to, some 2019 stuff and some working through my backlog:
The Budos Band - The Budos Band V
Fuck, man...killer instrumental funk rock / heavy psych that works perfectly for when you want something to be in the background but fuller than an ambient album or something. I need to dig deeper into this one, I think it has a lot more for me to get from it...but I already seriously dig what I'm getting.
Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Fuck, man, this one surprised me. Best pop album I've heard in a long time. Best new album I've heard in a while, and honestly my aoty so far. The music nerd internet has been really split on this one, and I'm very firmly on the positive side here, I don't think we've had pop songs this infectious since Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion, and this is a more consistent and substantial release than that was, honestly. I can't believe how much I love this thing.
Boris - New Album
The world lied to me about this one! I get that a j pop shoegazey thing isn't what Boris fans are likely to enjoy given that band's normal thing, but this such an inspired and inventive album! It's my favorite of their discography already (I wasn't a massive fan before but I like them), it just oozes creativity and energy in a way I can't not love. If you've only heard the big important Boris albums and haven't gone into the rest of their discog, please give this one a try.
sonder - Plainsongs for Bunmak Interim
rym lists this as being progressive electronic, ambient, trance, post-industrial, neo-psychedelia, dream trance, and sound collage and I think that list gets across pretty well how much variety and how many novel fusions make it onto this release. I'm describing everything in similar terms at this point, but this record is just bursting at the seams with ideas and I just can't believe my ears. Plenty of times a track would change and me, sitting in my room like a lonely nerd, would audibly be like "OH HELL YEAH!!!" This is just so fucking exciting...I don't know if I'm hearing the future on this, in fact I know I'm hearing a lot of the past, but I feel boundaries being pushed on here in a way that rarely happens. This should be a monumental big deal but I don't think it will be...so if you want to have one of those to put under your belt and speak the gospel of for years to come...listen to this :) I don't just mean that in terms of quality, as I could just say that about any unpopular thing I like...this feels like looking down an exciting new road that will certainly be a dead end and noticed by few but worthy of respect for how much it distinguishes itself in that tiny space. Idk frens, I just love it.
Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers [Moanin']
You know, I'm pretty sure I've heard this before, but this is at the very least my first time in a long time checking it out. Fantastic and accessible jazz that really shows off how exciting drumming in the genre can be. It's also one of the first jazz albums I'd recommend to a complete newcomer...too many people hear Kind of Blue or something and decide they don't 'get' jazz or that it's too boring for them and I just wish they started here instead.
Eden Ahbez "Nature Boy" - Eden's Island (The Music of an Enchanted Isle)
Exotica of the 50s and early 60s has been pretty unbearable to me a lot of the time, but this is a genuinely interesting example of the genre to modern ears. It's still an easy listen like most of this stuff is, so I'd recommend it pretty broadly, if only for the historical novelty of exploring the interesting (and totally exploitative) bubble that exotica was.
Slauson Malone - A Quiet Farwell, 2016-2018
The peak of hip hop so far this year, imo. This one is getting a lot of comparisons to Earl Sweatshirt's Some Rap Songs, and while I get it on a surface level...I don't think the comparison really holds up. I like this record a lot more than the clusterfuck Earl put together, and it's honestly a much more unhinged effort that leans harder on the sound collage-y sides of that sound. It's a less claustrophobic sound than what it gets compared to, ideas are given room to breathe and develop...it's really not going for the same thing, just using some similar techniques. Anyway if you like hip hop but want to hear something genuinely new, give this a listen. It's a pretty layered album, so I expect it to hold up very well to a lot of relistens.
