I've been feeling guilty about ignoring the vintage sound system I assembled last year, so I'm making a point to put on an album more often. Lately I've been enjoying my two Yipes! albums from 1979 and 1980; they're an American pop/rock band with a fun, energetic sound I never get tired of. Here's the whole of their first album (maybe try Out in California at 6:53) and one of my favourites from the second. I'm excited to learn they have a new album, which I'm about to buy! I really should order the vinyl, just to complete my collection, but the digital download will have to do for now.
Arctic Monkeys. I'm going to take a long road trip this weekend, and it's great music to drive to.

It's obviously not new but I like the basslines on quite a few of the songs and as a relatively new bass player I like to listen to albums that have some cool lines. I usually listen to one album on repeat for a while so the current flavor of the month is this one. If anyone is interested my top 3 tracks of the album they'd be (in no particular order):
Really like the constant driving beat Tina Weymouth lays down.
I haven't seen it but I'll definitely checked it out. And yeah, granted I only listened to their 1977 album but all the songs on the album (at least the ones I can remember) always had a solid groove.
The album is 3 years old by now but I just discovered Woman by the band Justice. What a cool record, full of these tight electronic looping beats which are just perfect for physical activity, imo. Some of my fav tracks are Fire, Heavy Metal, and Close Call.
In terms of singles, Vampire Weekend just released a track with Steve Lacy called Sunflower, which is wicked. Just prime Vampire Weekend, and not like a rehash of their A-Punk sound but a perfect continuation, kind of like Wavves' Afraid of Heights was to King of the Beach. I also listened to Big Blue but wasn't as big a fan of that one.
Also - check out The Promised Neverland OP song Touch Off by UVERworld. Absolute banger.

Mostly old favourites this week.
I'd be lying if I said my Prince binge wasn't because of the recent MJ allegations, although Prince isn't free from his own controversies either. I hope once the storm settles down in some decades we'll look back on two young, exceptionally talented black men, both with strongly internalized sexuality and spirit, bottled and commercialized. You wonder how it would have been different if we allowed these men to live healthier and more expressive lives, perhaps we wouldn't be in the dark place we are now. For both to have been alive and in their prime at the same time, and how they were still able to put so much life into so much of their music and be pillars of their genres and movements despite everything, is remarkable.
Joanna Newsom's Ys, someone has been recommending it here, I'm enjoying it so far.
Have One On Me is probably more accessible, though it's a huge album. Let me know if you'd like some song recommendations from it. I love all her stuff (though her newest was her weakest in my opinion).

I do like the complexity and weirdness, I usually prefer long songs with intricate compositions.
It reminds me quite a bit of Rasputina.
Long songs are the best. I always love a good build up and release.
I've been listening to a lot of Doom metal. Mainly Solace, Electric Wizard, and Sleep. Sleep's Holy Mountain and Further by Solace are phenomenal albums. Any other metal fans here?

The National recently released a single leading up to their new album releasing in May, which I thought was decent, but they simultaneously released a Spotify playlist containing their entire discography (over 8 hours long!). I’ve been listening through that and even found a few great tracks that I’ve somehow missed in the past, like Humiliation.
I’m more of a fan of their older work without the electronic bits mixed into the sound, but am nonetheless very excited about the approaching album release.
Yeah that new single didn't get me very excited for the new album, but Rylan is on the tracklist and I was hoping they would put that out. Here's them playing it on KEXP.

I've been watching a Youtube of Scala and Kolocny 'Live in Bruges' and it's amazing. I've spoken of this musical choral group here before.
I happened upon September Mourning and have been enjoying them. Mostly just been listening, but I enjoy the style of their videos as well. They're a relatively heavy melodic metal group with a female singer, which hits on many things that I enjoy.

I just picked up the new LP by Single Mothers. Canadian hipster punk. I've also been spinning a bit of d-beat from Wolfbrigade and The Varukers, though really more as background noise. Another recent pickup is the remaster of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black so that's been getting a lot of play.
