My boyfriend introduced me to Car Seat Headrest's album Twin Fantasy. I've been listening to Cute Thing and Bodys a lot more than I'd like to admit. They're very nice tracks and they're surprisingly similar to my current condition, so I've been listening to them to fill the small hole our distance put in my heart.

I am still culling my releases from artists I follow on Spotify for the best of 2018. I am also starting to see why some people have been saying it's been a slow year for music. I started with about 200 albums and this is what's left at the moment. All of those at least survived a 'first pass' listen, but not many really grabbed me either.

Once that's done I'm going to check out this excellent thread in listentothis that popped up the other day. Then I'll be dumping my picks into the l2t bestof submission form and listening to everything in that spreadsheet/voting on/culling it with the rest of the l2t crew.

Once the sheet's in a more complete/clean state I'll share a copy here in ~music so everyone on tildes can pitch in with the listening process, and get a peek at how we make the lists every year. It's pretty inclusive/informal. We'll see how good tildes is at finding the overlooked gems. We also gotta get /r/letstalkmusic's crew involved as well - pestering them every year has become tradition. :P

I suspect if you do some digging in /r/japanesejazz you can find plenty more. If you're just interested in funk (not specifically from Japan) you can try this mix. Edit: Or on spotify.

Four stand out in particular, all of which are huge recommendations:

Mitski - Bury Me at Makeout Creek
Probably my favorite from her discography. Tons of teenage angst, romance and odes to interpersonal connections, gorgeous poetic lyrics overlaid by noisy guitars and catchy melodies. Songs like First Love/Late Spring and Carry Me Out are ballads that I love with all my heart.

American Holly - Four Ways to Say Goodbye Forever
This is a short EP that's only about 15 minutes long, but it's incredibly sweet. Four songs about long-distance relationships, seeking comfort in the warmth of someone else, and generally just love. Another musician and a friend of mine that goes by The Boneless Boy also plans on doing a full cover of the EP soon which I'm excited for.

    The Whiting Brothers - D'Urberville
This is one of the most obscure but appreciable albums I've listened to. It was made by a now-disbanded group called the Whiting Brothers (Which later evolved into American Holly!). This was their debut and final album, but it's a lovely one. A concept album that has musical influences from so many different bands, and inspired lyrics with catchy melodies that stick in your head and have you humming them for days.

AJJ - People Who Can Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The World
A folk punk classic, and one I don't have a Bandcamp link for but it's popular enough that it doesn't matter. Frantic acoustic guitars overlay musings about a little bit of everything. Exploring concepts such as existential dread, self hatred, madness, and the perspective of a psychopath earlier on, before mellowing and maturing. The last three tracks paint contrasting pictures of nihilism and unconditional love with hope for your fellow man. Personal Space Invader closes with one of my favorite verses of all-time:

"Oh, and welcome to this world
Have as much fun as you would like
While helping others have as much fun as you're having
And be kind to those you love
And be kind to those you don't
But for God's sake you gotta be kind!
And respectful because we're all one soul
Be the best fucking human that you can be!"

Tyranny is probably the most sinister sounding rock(?) I've heard, and virtue's variety is amazing:

    • QYURRYUS sounds like arabic EDM.
    • Pyramid of Bones like anti consumerism metal
    • Lazy Boy comparitively pop

Virtue is an album I love so much I don't know if it's really that good, or it's just nailed my taste.

So if anyone knows of anything similar sounding I would very much appreciate it.
