It's a bit funny seeing everyone on hackernews going "what's tildes?"

The only thing that I miss from Reddit are the way different communities are created there. For instance, I like to browse the GNU Emacs community in Reddit. And I know that in that subreddit everything is related to Emacs. Will Tildes give its users the ability to create their own communities?

Deimos has indicated that groups and sub-groups will usually be created by moderators of existing groups, when they see a demand for a new group or sub-group. This demand will probably be demonstrated by the existence lots of posts with a particular tag. For example, having a lot of posts in ~movies tagged "star wars" would eventually lead the moderators of ~movies to create ~movies.starwars.

The idea is to prevent individuals from becoming mini-gods in their domains. Groups are created with and for existing communities, by teams of moderators. They're a shared resource, rather than a private privilege.

Well, but in order to prevent mini gods you create a single god. Groups can't appear naturally.

We're stuck for the moment: the site doesn't have any features built yet to support decentralised moderation, so Deimos has to be everything. Remember: this website is still in "alpha" testing. That means it doesn't have all the features it will have when it's a finished product (you could consider this current version of the website like a toddler that's taking its first steps; eventually it'll be running marathons and jumping hurdles, but for now, it's just learning to put one foot in front of the other).

In the future, there will be a trust/reputation system here, which will allow people to gradually acquire more and more moderation-type abilities, eventually including the ability to create new groups.

For now, you're right: Deimos has to create all groups. However, as the site grows, the ability to create groups will be decentralised, just like all other moderation tasks.

There will probably be some sort of user creation eventually, but I don't know exactly what it will look like. At least for quite a while, it's likely to require going through an approval process...

There will probably be some sort of user creation eventually, but I don't know exactly what it will look like. At least for quite a while, it's likely to require going through an approval process to make sure that new communities make sense, are being put into a reasonable spot in the group hierarchy, and so on.

For now, the site is just far too small to need a ton of extremely-specific communities. The tagging system works for similar purposes, and as the site expands we can start formalizing into more actual groups more. So for now if you wanted all emacs posts, you could get them from your subscriptions at https://tildes.net/?tag=emacs or inside ~comp specifically at https://tildes.net/~comp?tag=emacs

Nice, these tags are cool. But yeah the site/community is still small, lets grow it patiently :). I just hope that I can replace Reddit with Tildes someday in the near future.
