What have you been listening to this week?
What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something!
Feel free to give recs or dicuss anything about each others' listening habits.
You can make a chart if you use last.fm:
Honestly lately I've been too lazy to find songs I actually enjoy, so even though I'll never admit it to anyone who knows me, I've started listening to that c h i l l h o p l o f i s t u d y b e a t s livestream garbage from chilledcow just to have some background noise... and enjoying it. I think I'm becoming one of them
Lots and lots of Rammstein. I'm trying to make myself feel better after deciding that flying to Mexico for a concert was a silly idea.
Aw, man. Disappointed to hear that you decided against it. I sorta tried to convince you (though there's no way in hell that I could afford such a thing right now). You've seen them before, though, right? I suppose just cherish the memories you have of that!
Edit: never really thought about how "Aw, man" is kind of a sexist thing to say, even as a generic interjection. It's an interesting expression to read about, I'd say. But my use of it is pretty funny in the context of a discussion I initiated earlier... Color me embarrassed. (And now I'm thinking even more about just about everything I say.)
I've been going through the whole Beatles discography in chronological order. Well, almost chronological. I was looking at a list that put Magical Mystery Tour after everything else, but apparently since the list was specifically UK albums that's just when it was released there, it was actually released elsewhere in '67.
I also realized there were some singles that weren't on albums that I had missed, and apparently some of those are on MMT, and some are on "Past Masters".
I figured out I missed some songs while on the White Album, got to the song "Glass Onion", and John started referencing a bunch of songs I hadn't heard. Colored me confused. Looked up a couple of the singles (Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields). Finished the White Album after that. Now I'm listening to MMT.
Really diggin' Strawberry Fields Forever. Hadn't really heard much of it before, has a pretty epic feel to it. Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to...
Folk. Lots of folk
What folk?
Bob dylan
Billy joel
Buffalo Springfield
CCR
Crosby
Donovan
Gordan Lightfoot
Just to name a few
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Propagandhi - Victory Lap has been in my rotation for a couple months now. I need some more modern punk with good writing. Favorite tracks: Cop Just Out of Frame, Nigredo
If you want modern punk have you considered one of Iggy Pop's favourite bands of the moment, Sleaford Mods? Also I think Slaves are really killing it right now, and Idles might be worth a look too.
This week I have mostly been listening to recent albums/eps by the following artists... (links go to representative singles)
Tessa Violet - lovely floaty candyflossy poppy goodness
Warmduscher - UK post-punk rockin' fun.
Haiku Salut - deliciously chilled instrumental electronica
Blackpink - kpop with just a bit of edge. I don't usually kpop much but I heart Blackpink (also GLITTER BALL TANK)
I'm fairly close to trashing my main playlist and starting again so will be watching this thread with interest.
I decided to give The Age of Men is Over by Feminazgul a listen this afternoon after reading an interview with the artist. I'm all for pushing right-wingers out of the metal scene, but this album didn't do it for me. There wasn't anything wrong with the music, and with only 3 songs and a total run time of about 20 minute's it's more of an EP than a proper album, but black metal has never really been my style.
5x5
DJ Rozwell - NONE OF THIS IS REAL - I listened to this and one of its expansion packs and it's probably one of the most interesting albums I've ever heard. As some guy who reviewed it on rateyourmusic says, "it's like lofi dungeons and dragons if it was music."
The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - I listened to this + Sticky Fingers for the first time this week and while I don't really like either of these albums as a whole at all, it has Gimme Shelter and it got that high because I've been enamored with that song.
Portishead - Third - I listened to this for the first time last night and it hasn't left my mind all day. Everything in this is so interesting to me and I've been on and off listening to it since I woke up. I don't think there's quite anything else like this that I've heard.
Portishead are amazing. I saw them live once, standing up to my ankles in mud, in the pouring rain. Didn't care at all, was completely transfixed by Beth's amazing voice. imo Dummy is their best album but they're all great. If you like that kind of sound you might also check out Lamb. Also worth a mention are London Grammar, while not as experimental musically as Portishead, Hannah Reid's voice does similar things to me as Beth Gibbon's. Slightly spooky chills all day long.
That DJ Rozwell sounds interesting, thanks for the heads up on that.
Not such a big fan of Dummy, but my girlfriend and a couple others convinced me to try Third out because they know my taste very well and told me it was something really unique. I'm gonna definitely check out the self-titled record as well, and I'll be sure to get around to Lamb and London Grammar, thank you for the recs!
Do let me know if you try out DJ Rozwell, I'd love to hear some more thoughts about it.
I haven't been listening to anything intentionally, but my wife has been playing a lot of Hozier in the background. A lot of it's pretty good.
MxPx just released a new album today so that.
Leo Kottke — Instrumentals: Best Of The Chrysalis Years
A nice collection of some of Kottke's instrumentals. With a name like that, who'd have guessed? Fave Track: Wheels.
Youandewan — There Is No Right Time
A nice electronic album. Fave track: Be Good To Me Poly.
Dictaphone — APR 70
Ambientish electronic music. Great for contemplative mornings.
Lusine — Sensorimotor
Leftfield Electronic. Really cool distorted vocals. Fave track: Just A Cloud.
Chuck Johnson — Balsalms
Longer ambientish folk guitar. For fans of American Primitivism, drone, and folk.
Khruangbin — Con Todo El Mundo
Mostly instrumental psych surf with influences from all over the globe.
The Lushlife Project — Budapest Eskimos
Mid-aughts trip-hop. Fave track: Mushroom Man.
Science Fiction - Brand New
They are one of the most depressing bands I can think of. They mix spirituality and politics in this album, which leads to songs like 137 which place nuclear annihilation in an anti-Christian context. The whole song, hell the whole album, can be thought of as a criticism of religious insitutions for harming communities they were meant to bring together, often calling on their antithesis, "the beast," for salvation.
Beyond the lyrics, they dance between soft and hard rock throughout the album, but always remind you that they are a punk band at heart.
Yeah, edgy emo punk about nuclear holocaust is exactly my kind of trash.
Veela and Raindear
Virtual Self - Angel Voices
Virtual Self/Porter Robinson released a single recently, and it’s one of his best ever.
Other than that, not that much new music. I’ve been listening to some Karma Fields, Madeon, underscores and Porter Robinson.
Seagulls! it lifts my spirits
Bob Marley for the same reason and it calms my baby.
A lot of Nothing More. If you like heavy instrumentals with melodic vocals (and occasional, tasteful screaming), NM is fantastic. Hawkins' vibrato is really something else, and the bass is severely underrated in the band. Lots of good topics in their music. Some of their best tracks are Love?, Salem (Burn The Witch), Take A Bullet, God Went North, Ripping Me Apart, and Still In Love, to name a few. Just an extremely talented band with a criminally low amount of fame.
Daron Malakian's side project, Scars On Broadway, recently got a new album, Dictator. Daron does the guitar for System of a Down, so the album does very much take influence from that (it's his style after all), so if you like SOAD, you'll like Dictator. Highlight tracks are Lives, Angry Guru, and We Won't Obey.
Boy Hit's Car's self titled album is a fantastic, unorthodox early 2000's Nu metal album. Their sound is so very different from anything else I've been able to find. The vocalist fucking rocks, the bass is nice and meaty and the guitar work is very impressive. Some very eastern sounding songs on there. Unfortunately, their later albums didn't build too much off the sound of the first, and I haven't listened to them as much so I can't provide an opinion on those. Highlight tracks are Man Without Skin, I'm A Cloud, Going To India, and Love core (Welcome To).
Death Grips - Exmilitary
It's so fucking aggressive and I love it. I know Death Grips are a meme band but damn this shit just gets you going.
Migos - Culture
My favorite track this week is probably T-Shirt. I dunno, I like Migos. It's all good. I feel like people who look down on modern rap just aren't looking at it all with an open mind.
Gorillaz - The Now Now
I'm still chewing through this one, but I like it better than Humanz already. That's a pretty low bar though. It's no Demon Days.
Toooons of Billie Eilish, with a side of Christine and the Queens.
I've also been listening to the new Vinyl Moon. It's good, but not super interesting. Can't say anything about it since not everyone has gotten their record yet, last I checked. I'd dig another Cloudgardener type mix.
Right now I'm high and listening to Tash Sultana.
