What have you been listening to this week?
What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something!
Feel free to give recs or dicuss anything about each others' listening habits.
You can make a chart if you use last.fm:
I've been listening to Lucifer's second self-title album, Lucifer II. It's summery 70s style hard rock/proto-metal with vocals reminiscent of Stevie Nicks in her prime. They've got a single and video for "California Son".
I've also been listening to Beyond the End of Despair by Japanese power metal band Galneryus. Released in 2006, this might be the best album of the band's original line-up with Yama-B on vocals, and the last with all English vocals. This is the band DragonForce wants to be when they grow up.
I love Galneryus, honestly pretty surprised to see them mentioned. I don't think they're well-known at all, but I could be wrong.
For more along the Lucifer style, if you don't already know them, highly suggest checking out the bands Graveyard and Imperial State Electric. They're both great modern 70s-hard-rock-ish bands.
I discovered them via Netflix, back when they had Rin/Daughters of Mnenosyne on streaming. The anime had their songs "Alsatia" and "Cause Disarray" as opening and closing themes, and it was "Alsatia" that caught my interest.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check them out.
Lot of Peccatum's Lost In Reverie this week. I've been listening to this album for years and there's nothing quite like it.
Hmm, good call. I'd heard some of their other stuff, but apparently missed this album.
I'd recommend The 3rd and the Mortal, if you don't already listen to them.
It's super good yeah, thanks.
5x5
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me - Pretty, but feels more like a compilation than a cohesive album. There's a lot of jumping between love/breakup themes and medieval-based tracks. Still good, but I'm not sure how listening to this more will affect my opinion on it. First disc is the best.
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire - Beautiful. Not as beautiful as I Could Live in Hope, but I think Low knows how to close with some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Flying Saucer Attack - Flying Saucer Attack - Beat the shit out of my ears and let me die in space.
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - This is only on here because I loop Kamera when I'm reading stuff sometimes.
Just finished a long road trip through the American South, following the US National Civil Rights Trail. Listened to a lot of blues and funk along the way, but in particular had my kids listen to Gil Scott Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" several times. Now that we're back in the (not so) cold Northland, I'm putting together a playlist that will include songs like "Birmingham Sunday," about places we visited.
I'm really digging Years & Years' sophomore album Palo Santo.
Well recently I've been digging further into Incubus and stewing on some of their albums. I never really like singles off of many albums, but Pardon Me has such a grandiose and important feel to it. It has ups and downs throughout the song. All of Make Yourself is fantastic because the whole album focuses on Making Yourself. Creating who you are as a person and developing your own thoughts. I definitely want to check out Light Grenades and If Not Now, When. I've been stuck in a music rut for a while now so it's gonna suck when I finish dissecting their discography.
I am (unfortunately? I dunno...I feel bad when im like PLAY MORE LIKE YOUR OLD STUFF when all a band probably wants to do is grow musically and what not) one of those fans who think A Crow... was their last, decent, album.
S.C.I.E.N.C.E was a goddamn masterpiece. I was lucky enough to catch them touring with 311 when Make Yourself came out and they did a "small clubs tour" and that still remains one of the best shows I've ever been to.
I just cant seem to get into any of their new stuff? I think I just enjoyed the "harder" part of their musical career. Its a little to soft for me now.
Yeah S.C.I.E.N.C.E is a definite 9.5/10 for me(Not a fan of Magic Medicine and I despise segue/intermission tracks so the last track is ech). I love Science through Morning View but funny enough, I don't care for A Crow... and Light Grenades is hit or miss for me. INNW is actually a very wonderful album with softer material, but it's still musically impressive and engaging. Promises, Promises, The Original, and Isadore are really good tracks off of it. The album really showcases Boyd's vocal range and it's the most fun album to sing along with lol
Kashiwa Daisuke's Program Music I and II. Program Music I is incredible, mixing classical and glitchy electronic. II has a lot less glitch influence, but is still a solid album. I'd highly recommend his song "stella". It's got a way of shifting so you never quite know what to expect, but it still flows beautifully.

Program Music II is so good, I happened across it a bit randomly a few months ago as a recommendation related to World's End Girlfriend. I've listened to it quite a few times since then, it's a really neat style of music, almost game-music-like.
Do you have any recommendations for other similar artists/albums at all?
WEG and KD are pretty unique, unfortunately. WEG is one of my favorite artists to show people because of his range. I've not found that much similar. satanicpornocultshop is often mentioned, but they never scratched the same itch for me since they're much less chill. Ventian Snares weird classical albums, My Downfall and Rossz csillag, maybe? I'll keep you in mind if I find anything though!
Jungle - Happy Man
The Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer - Forever Fool
Gorillaz - The Now Now
Florence + the Machine - Sky Full of Song
I've been listening to Vulfpeck's last album Mr Finish Line, it's a fantastic album. Also Run the Jewels, their latest album has some great songs, I really enjoy Kill your masters.
Seems electronic music is a bit underrepresented there...
In no particular order:
What Venetian Snares? There's so much.
True :) Separate songs, but most seem to come from both Rossz Csillag Alatt Született and Detrimentalist.
Both great albums. I think Meathole is actually my favorite (I like heavy), but those are right behind it.
I've been listening to a lot of Gucci Mane (Mainly Woptober and Everybody Lookin) and Lil Uzi Vert (The Perfect Luv Tape) while I'm working since it helps me zone out, while I'm at home though my friend got me into jazz so Miles Davis (Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue, and Doo Bop) and Charles Mingus (Moanin')
I've been listening to Beethoven's The Creatures of Prometheus, a suite of Ballet music. It's mostly known as the earlier composition providing the Finale theme of his Symphony No. 3 Eroica. But Prometheus is enjoyable in its own right! Listen to a performance on YouTube.
I've listened to The Glow, Pt 2 several times this week, it's really resonating with me right now. My view of it as one of the most masterfully constructed pieces of art ever has been reaffirmed. Highly recommend Disk Two: Other Songs and Destroyed Versions if you haven't heard it already, it's a very nice complement.
Finally got around to listening to Flower Boy by Tyler, the Creator. I really enjoyed it and think it's his best work. Also have been giving Pinata by Freddie Gibbs and Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown a good amount of listening time. I can definitely recommend all three albums to any hip-hop fans for sure.
Boston, Heart, Eagles, Billy Thorpe, Jim Croce, Def Leppard, ELO.
And audiobooks, John Walker's Rise of Mankind and today started the latest Halo audiobook Bad Blood.
I've been listening to a lot of electroswing this week, as well as a bit of rock. There's just something about the fusion of swing and electronic music that's just so much fun.
I've been listening to a lot of Unknown Mortal Orchestra this week!
